For over 25 years, the Dragonbreath has been Allderdice’s creative writing literary arts journal for the students. The Dragonbreath is a collection of pieces demonstrating students’ talents in the literary arts. The pieces can include fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Art such as drawings and photography is also accepted.

The purpose of the Dragonbreath is to give students the chance to publish and publicize their work. It is an opportunity for students to share their talents and knowledge with their fellow classmates.

The most common type of submission is poetry.  Some of the poems center on personal issues, relationships, or other abstract concepts. The topics are mostly typical teen issues with which most Allderdice students can relate. Photography submissions are also popular.

Junior Angelina Leoni plans to submit a short story to the Dragonbreath. “I want to be a journalist and figured this would be a good way to start.” She will submit a short story based on Alice in Wonderland. However, Dice will serve as the world the character enters. “I thought it would be an interesting way to capture the insanity of the school.” One of the editors of the Dragonbreath, senior Kat Stemplewski, is submitting four fiction stories and two poems. Most of her pieces were done for other classes, but she edited them and subsequently submitted them to the Dragonbreath.

Stemplewski said that all pieces go through the process of being discussed at meetings and then edited. The Dragonbreath staff keeps in constant contact with the submitters and works with them to make their pieces the best that they can be. At first, submissions trickled in slowly, but they are pouring in now, and Kat says the Dragonbreath “looks like it’s going to come out well.”Pieces for this year’s issue of the Dragonbreath can be submitted via e-mail at Dragonbreath07@gmail.com. Submissions must include name, grade level, the title of piece, homeroom, and e-mail if applicable. The deadline was officially March 16th but Dr. Josh Slifkin, the sponsor of the  publication, says that the date may be negotiable. “Anyone can submit things. It’d be wonderful to get as many as possible,” he said.
