Though April 22nd may be just an ordinary day for some, recent environmental hype has many Pittsburghers, among them Allderdice students, planning to take part in a wide variety of Earth Day activities. The Environmental Club will volunteer at Frick Environmental Center’s Earth Day Family Festival. The students will help lead programs for children such as art projects and tree planting. The group does similar projects with the Center throughout the year, as well. Chemistry teacher and Environmental Club facilitator Linda Neuman feels that the group of students involved in the club is more so “a support system for Frick Nature Center” than an actual club. Frick Environmental Center is not the only park or reserve having an Earth Day celebration. The Student Conservation Association is hosting an Earth Day event at Schenley Park where volunteers will be removing invasive species, tree planting, and doing trail work. Attention has been drawn to environmental affairs recently due to the widespread success of Al Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth. The documentary focuses on the issue of global warming and the effects it has on the environment. An Inconvenient Truth has won two Oscars and numerous other awards, increasing recognition of environmental concerns among celebrities and students alike. Various science teachers have even screened the movie for students during class time. Biology II teacher Edward Flynn believes that the movie had a positive impact on his students. He feels that even if a student has been motivated to do one small thing to better the environment, progress has been made. “When we came back from seeing An Inconvenient Truth, the kids wanted to talk about it because they were so moved by it,” said Flynn. “Most of the people in Environmental Club had the idea that global warming was a problem,” said Neuman, “but global warming has become both an environmental issue and a political issue now.” |
