The weather is getting warmer and spring is officially here. After this short season comes the endless summer months filled with heat and laziness. But what about some students who would like to do more than soak up the sun on a lawn chair this summer? For teens that are unable to sit still during their free time, a summer program may be a ticket out of boredom. Pre-college programs are popular opportunities that many universities offer. In Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University’s pre-college program lasts from June 30, 2007 to August 10, 2007. Pittsburgh residents can live on-campus for the full college experience or stay at home and take classes at the university. CMU offers nine specific programs, including real CMU classes for normal college credit. Last summer, senior Sarah Schneider participated in the Barnard University pre-college program in New York City. Schneider took classes like Film and the 1960s during her stay. “It was like a real college experience because we lived in the dorms and the teachers actually taught,” she said. The exciting atmosphere of New York allowed her “to go to museums, experience the culture of New York, and eat good food.” Teens looking to get away from school can choose to participate in teen tours in the U.S. or abroad. Senior Brandt Gelman traveled to Israel this past summer with the Young Judea youth group. Students on teen tours to Israel travel across the entire country while learning about Israeli culture and history. Gelman’s favorite part of his trip was “eating falafel and running into Jason Aizenman at the movies.” Although in Israel during war, Gelman “was never afraid.” He “would recommend [the trip] to young students who have studied about Israel but have never had a chance to see it.”For those looking to earn some extra money while relaxing at home, a summer job is another option. Many students work at popular spots like Rita’s in Squirrel Hill. Senior Ben Rafson worked as a lifeguard for the Jewish Community Center’s outdoor pool in Monroeville. Rafson said that it was relaxing and a “good way to make money." |
