DF: And, what about your teammates? Did your teammates affect your high school career a great deal? CM: Well, you know what? I think that was the first time I had an understanding of what a team was. I played a lot of football, but I hadn’t played my high school years. I just really didn’t get it until my senior year, but the guys that we had on the team, I mean, I’m still friends with many of them, and I think that they affected me in the sense that they were good teammates. They gave me my first sense of real team and camaraderie. DF: Did you only play runningback for Allderdice? CM: No. I played runningback; I played linebacker; I played quarterback sometimes; I played receiver sometimes. DF: What was your favorite position to play? CM: Runningback! Either runningback or linebacker. He (coach Wittgartner) allowed me to play this rover type backer where I was basically able to do whatever I wanted to do on defense. You know I really enjoyed that. DF: Did you have any memorable games or memorable plays? Martin: Yeah, the Schenley game where we played at Schenley. That that was one of my best games in high school, but the Perry game let me erase that. Perry was such a feared team back then; they had the biggest players. Perry recruited people from all over the city; they just had a couple of linemen. This one guy named Ramon Hart was just like a terror, and before the game I remember all the scouts had come on up to see me, and I remember that was the hardest game. I remember thinking to myself, "Wow, why do they have to come to this game? Like nobody gets any rushing yards against them." And I went out and had something like 230 some yards against them, and maybe two or three touchdowns, and it ended up being one of the best games I’ve ever played in my life, whether it was in high school, college, or in the pros. Finegold: So would you say that was your biggest rivalry during high school, with Perry?
