Dear Editor,
I just wanted to bring light to a terrible trend the administration has been following in recent times. It seems that over the course of my high school career, the leaders of our school have been focusing more on test scores and hall sweeps, and less on the numerous achievements and recognition our students have brought to our school. Other than a brief announcement on the PA system (which the group must secure for itself), the clubs, teams and organizations receive no recognition, let alone appreciation, from the school itself. Now, not every group has gone without recognition. The National Merit Finalists, for example, received the attention they deserve. But what about the ‘Dice Soccer, Cross-Country and Swimming teams, all of which have brought in City Titles for the school for many years running, but this past year didn’t even get a pat on the back. Or what about STAND, the student-run organization that helped to raise over $7000 for the atrocities in Darfur? Even the school’s science teams have competed, for at least the past 3 years, at the state level, and have brought major recognition to our school. Where was the appreciation for them? Allderdice is our school, and in order to enjoy being here and to remain the #1 public school in the city (as we all know we are) we have to be proud of our students and their accomplishments. How are our students going to be inspired to work tirelessly for our school if their achievements aren’t going to be appreciated by those on high? If the school doesn’t give positive reinforcement, and only focuses on the negative, then what is going to inspire our students to attain the high level of achievement that they do? Maybe in the future, we can support our school and focus upon all the good things we have going for us, rather than the negative.
