Coach K is not only known for his hockey skills, but also for his teaching skills. Kornosky was the winner of the teacher excellence award when he was a social studies teacher in the beginning of the ‘06-‘07 school year. Since Coach K began work at Allderdice he has been moving all around the school. His adventure began on January 2, 2006, when he began student teaching for world cultures teacher Michael Isaac. In May he became a sub and in August he started teaching mainstream Civics, US history, and African American history. In November, he took over for math teacher Susan Cook for about three weeks. From there he went back to subbing until his Spanish “gig,” when Senora Marsha Plotkin departed. Now he is back to day-to-day subbing. Kornosky also teaches social studies class at night school at Schenley. On February 22, Kornosky turned 24. As most men his age are, Kornosky is quite the sports fan. His favorite team is Pitt Panthers Football, followed by Pitt basketball, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and in a close fifth place, the Pittsburgh Steelers. “I’m also an avid supporter of the Allderdice Dragons,” said Kornosky. During this past winter season, Kornosky picked up snowboarding after a hiatus of about five years. Kornosky also has an interest in travel. Kornosky has spent time in Spain in order to become fluent in the language. He then spent about two weeks in Ecuador to further experience the Spanish culture. “He had interesting stories that I enjoyed a lot, and he made us feel comfortable,” said sophomore Brian Dunn. Kornosky is not always a wild fun-loving character; he is also a reading fan. “You can always find me reading an interesting book or with a newspaper in the library,” said Kornosky. Though Kornosky has many accomplishments and interests, it will always lead back to teaching, since that is what he does every day. |
